On Saturday June 20, I will celebrate 5 years since the surgery that removed my most recent brain tumor. The 5-year mark is especially significant because that tumor came with a universal 3-5 year recurrence rate. So, every day from Sunday the 21st onward will be a bonus.
These past five years have followed anything but a predictable upward physical or emotional trajectory. I've been learning about the challenges of facing uncertainty and building resilience -- lessons that need to be relearned often.
June 20th was also coincidentally booked to be the Mountain Magic Trail Run. Mountain Magic is the biggest fundraiser for OutLive, my nonprofit for cancer survivors (www.outlivecancer.org). Unfortunately, social distancing restrictions meant we had to cancel this year's event.
In its place, we have put together the Pick Your Path Community Challenge (www.pickyourpathchallenge.com). Participants sign up to run, walk or hike 5, 10 or 25k on the weekend of June 19-21. They can do it on a route of their choosing, either alone, with family or with friends (within current social distancing guidelines).
The great new is, you don't have to be a runner or live in Spokane to take part!
I plan to spend my “cancer anniversary” celebrating life on the Mt. Spokane Nordic ski trails where the Mountain Magic Trail Run was supposed to be taking place.
I invite you to join me in spirit by signing up for the Pick Your Path Community Challenge.
When you do, you'll be helping OutLive develop its new Cancer Survivor Hub. The Hub will provide an online community for survivors as well as recovery resources and inspirational stories -- a resource made more crucial by the isolating nature of the current pandemic.
Trail Running is one way I celebrate life. OutLive is my way of making something good out of my cancer experience. Thank you for joining me on my special day, as you’re able.
Again, the event site is www.pickyourpathchallenge.com. Thanks!
PS June 20 is also the first day of summer. Another reason to celebrate life together!
PPS. If you're in, invite a friend or 2 to join as well. Thanks!
